Putney 274
BCCC 154 Lost by 120 runs
Putney CC (PCC) - 274 in 37 overs. BCCC- 154 all out in 28 overs. Putney CC won by 120 runs.
Weather - Lovely, hot, sun tanning summer's day
Great game of cricket especially for PCC !! They won the toss and notched up 274 in 37 overs !! Over 420 runs scored again on our BCCC pitch so good to see at least certain parts of the club functioning to their full potential !!
A new look PCC team won the toss and decided to have a bat on a dampish wicket. Close opened with Warn and put on 60 for the 1st wicket until Suraj clean bowled Worn with a great slow in swinger. Batsmen at the other end kept falling at regular internals to Graeme who ended up with decent figures under the circumstances of 6-0-43-4. Nik from the other end took 2 quick wickets and PCC were 132 for 7 off 22 overs at this stage.
That's when the captain made a wrong call and eased off by replacing Graeme and Nik. Right idea of trying to involve a few other players but it turned out as a wrong call at the end as it gave their opener Close easy opportunities to go on and score 138 valuable runs for his team until Anthony finally had him caught smartly by Graeme at backward point. Close batted very well and was the mainstay of their innings up until close to the end. Only Carnegie put up some resistance by being not out on 34. BCCC bowling besides Graeme and Nik was not as potent as it is usually and that, along with our dismal fielding, helped PCC reach 274 in 37 overs. Remaining bowling figures - Vish - 8-41-0 , Suraj -5-1-24-1,
Nik- 8-0-45-3, Anthony- 4-0-38-1, Leon-3-0-33-0 and Howard - 3-0-37-1.
Homemade tea by Phil was taken quickly as BCCC's batsmen were keen to get on with the task of chasing down this mammoth total of 274 in 40 overs.
However, it was not meant to be as Nik, on whose shoulders rested BCCC' s fate, was finally out very acrobatically caught at long on by their captain Alex for 59 runs. Nik alone, besides a useful 24 by Graeme, stood between BCC getting their backsides kicked rather embarrassingly, but even he could not stop BCCC in the end losing by 120 runs !! Credit to Putney as their fielding was above par as they must have saved over 40-50 runs in the field. Additionally, they bowled very well and to their field !!
BCCC had a strong batting line up and batted all the way down to 8 or 9 but unfortunately it was not meant to be and we lost quick wickets at regular intervals without having the chance to put up any big partnerships.
Man of the match - Nik for his quick 59 and for also taking 3 wickets.
Catch/s of the match - Has to go to Howard for taking a catch, especially off his own bowling. He did make hard work of it by juggling it a few times but finally showed us glimpses of why he was called the English Jonty Rhodes in his youth Academy years !!
Shot/s of the match - Nik for smashing a few sixes which he dismissively lofted over long on.
